Performance

  1. This is just the standard Gu formula with OKG (see below) added in.
  2. To quote the Gu website, “OKG [Ornithine alpha-ketoglutarate]is an amino acid complex that may inhibit the body’s tendency to break down muscle fiber while also possibly inhibiting tissue damage.” (bold emphasis mine) I recommend you look into the research on OKG before you buy into the product.

Experience

  1. Taste: unless you read the label, you’d have no idea what flavor this is except “terrible.” It pretty much tasted like some soft drinks I’ve had…and not the good ones. Only eat this if you’re trying to punish your tongue.
  2. Consistency (see video): runny caramel.
  3. Sweetness : mild.
  4. Texture: smooth.
  5. Aftertaste: kind of nasty…which is pretty standard for a lot of gels.
  6. Ease of use (see video): as always with Gu and Roctane, a simple, easy to use package.

Health

  1.  Quality of Ingredients/ Artificial ingredients: plenty of scientific-sounding stuff you can’t pronounce, though they throw you a bone with “sea salt.”
  2. Flavorings: “natural” flavors…which are anything but.
  3. Preservatives:  Contains preservatives (Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate)
  4. Allergens:  none.

Value

$2.25. The high end of the market. You’re paying a lot for OKG, so you better think it’s worth it.

Running Energy Gel Bottom Line

I can’t help but feel GU Roctane Energy Gel – Cherry Lime is just an attempt to extract value from people willing to pay for “the best”…as signaled by price. The science supporting OKG (Roctane’s main selling point) is weak at best and the cost of adding OKG is minimal (Google OKG supplements to see what I mean), so charging $2.50 for one of these packets seems like a ripoff. But hey, if it works for you, or it’s the only one you can stomach, go for it!
